I Corps Band Performing a Prelude for the Ceremony
Historians trace the origin of this event to 1863 in Columbus, Mississippi, where local women were decorating the graves of Confederate Soldiers when they noticed a number of unkempt Union Graves. These women also cleared these graves and laid flowers on them as well. From that simple act the word began to spread, and by 1865, this custom had reached Virginia.
